Jason Yim – Your Marketing Partner
My journey as a course creator started in 2017.
It all started when a friend of mine introduced me to the platform.
He was an instructor there and had several courses on the platform when he first started in 2015.
He let me in on a little secret and showed me his Udemy stats as an instructor.
He had over 8,000 students and had generated over USD 20k in revenue from his courses!
As he shared his journey with me, he said “You need to deliver value to your students by teaching them to solve a specific problem”.
As a developer, instead of teaching his students JavaScript 101, he taught them how to build the next Airbnb.
He taught them step by step how to accomplish a very specific goal.
He encouraged me to try it as a means of generating some side income.
I decided to give it a go and create a course on building chatbots without coding as that was what I was doing at the time with Unity Therapy.
I had built Unity Therapy on a platform called Chatfuel and had self taught myself to use the platform.
However I didn’t put much effort into the course as I didn’t think it would take off.
I created a 1 hour long course while my competition had 8 hour long courses.
I recorded entirely from my laptop mic with no additional equipment.
I edited the video with Windows Movie Maker with no fancy software.
I uploaded my course to Udemy and published it.
Nothing happened.
I waited a few more days.
Nothing happened.
I spoke to my friend again and it was then I realized that I was missing a key ingredient.
Marketing.
Relying on Udemy to provide you with traffic is like waiting for someone to feed you.
I did some research and went to market it.
I posted it on a few forums and then magic happened.
I started gaining a few hundred new students.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
3 years later, I still occasionally get new students signing up for this course.
In 2019, I decided to launch another course on Instagram Marketing.
I’ve grown niche IG accounts to 5 figure followers with an engagement rate of 12% so I felt this knowledge can be passed on.
However with a full time job, I barely had time to do this.
I created the course outline over the Hari Raya holidays.
I recorded the course at midnight after a full day of work (You can hear me stifling my yawns).
I got Sony Vegas Pro, a new software for editing.
Learnt on YouTube on how to use it.
Spent 3 months to to outline, create, record, and edit the course.
Launched it on Udemy.
I replicated the process of what I learnt marketing it.
I gained over one thousand students during the launch week in October 2019.
As you can see from the screenshot below, I’ve been gaining students all the way to 2020 even though I’ve stopped promoting the course.
Technology changes fast and the content of the course has become outdated really quickly.
I didn’t want to promote an outdated course, so i just left it as is.
2,000 students isn’t much when there are people with 100,000 students out there.
But 2,000 students is a start compared to 0 students.
For those of you thinking of doing something on the side, the only way to know the outcome is by doing it.
The only way to improve is to take the first step.
I hope this story has inspired you to take action on whatever it is you have been thinking about pursuing.
I’m currently thinking if I should create another course.
